About Long Lake Foundation Past Initiatives

In its efforts to enhance and preserve the Long Lake Watershed, the Long Lake Foundation has worked closely with the Long Lake Township, the Long Lake Association and the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy to identify and promote projects. Projects funded by the Long Lake Foundation have included:

Fox Island

In 2005, your Foundation, together with the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy and, most importantly, Donald Oleson and Gerald Oleson, finally achieved their goal after many years: placing Fox Island in public usage.

Natural Features Inventory

The Foundation along with the Township, financed the Long Lake Township Natural Features Inventory (NFI). The NFI identified and prioritized areas of natural habitat and viewscapes which enhance property values. The NFI is available to be directly incorporated into the Township master plan and zoning ordinances and serve as an objective guide for the Township Board and Planning Commission. Further, it will identify those properties that should be on highest priority acquisition by the Foundation and/or Conservancy.  The NFI is central to intelligent development for Long Lake Township.

Acquisition of South Island

The Long Lake Preservation Association, now know as the Long Lake Foundation, was founded in 1977. The sole purpose of the Association was to purchase South Island to preserve it from development.

Picnic Island

Erosion control was studied in 1999. The study was conducted due to an increased amount of foot traffic on the steep banks. The Long Lake Foundation funded the design and construction of erosion control improvements that were completed in 2001. Improvements to Picnic Island include stairs to an observation deck, beautiful native vegetation to control erosion, and signage to encourage proper use of the island.

We Need Your Support

Your support is vital to the mission of Long Lake Foundation. You can support our efforts by becoming a member or making a donation.

General Island Maintenance

The Long Lake Foundation regularly funds ongoing maintenance of the most heavily used islands of Picnic Island, Long Island, and South Island.  Funding has provided trail maintenance, signage, and erosion control.

Watershed Management Plan

The Long Lake Foundation assisted in funding a study of water quality and future threats to the Long Lake Watershed.  This study outlined long-term recommendations for the protection of the Long Lake Watershed.

Future Projects

The Long Lake Foundation continues to seek opportunities that preserve and enhance the quality of the Long Lake Watershed. If you know of a project that would be of interest, we encourage you to contact any member of the Long Lake Foundation Board.
