Long Lake Foundation Focus

2/7/2014

The main focus of the Long Lake Foundation during late 2012 and into 2013 was the joint effort with Long Lake Township and the Long Lake Association to abate the erosion on the western exposure of Picnic Island.

After the successful completion of that project we turned our attention to the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy and the effort they have spearheaded with Long Lake Township to what will become the Timbers Recreation Area.  Not only will this 256 acre parcel of land located on the northeast shore of Long Lake provide a multitude of recreational activities to the community but is highly significant to the long term health and beauty of Long, Mickey and Ruth Lakes.  The greatest flow of overland water into our lakes comes from the northeast portion of the watershed and this land is the center of that corridor.  There are 2 lakes on this property and some 9,000 feet of shoreline, which includes 2,000 feet on Long Lake.

We are proud to be working in partnership with the Conservancy who has already had a positive impact on our watershed by helping protect and provide stewardship for the islands on Long Lake in recent years.  And with Long Lake Township who has always been a strong participant in protecting this watershed.  To date Long lake Foundation has committed $25,000 to the Timbers Project and is working to raise more.

If you have not made a gift to the Timbers Project please consider the importance of doing so.  If you have already made a gift please consider if you can do more.  This is a once in a lifetime chance to protect this gem and our lakes.

Please contact the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy at 231-929-7911 to make a tax-deductable gift to the Timbers Project or discuss best options in maximizing your gift or contact Long Lake Foundation President, Dennis Wiand, at 248-613-1044.
